4 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 lb butter (4 sticks), softened
1 tsp almond extract
1-2 egg whites
Preheat oven to 350F. Cream the butter and sugar, then add the almond extract. Mix in the flour slowly, keeping it well mixed. Spread the dough out onto a pie plate, cookie sheet or other dish at a thickness of 1/4 - 1/2 inch. Beat the egg white(s) and brush the top of the dough. Bake until slightly browned on top, about 20-30 minutes. Cool and cut into 2" squares or if you use a pie plate, you can cut into small wedges.
There is no leavening so these are dense, similar to a fudge brownie. The middles may appear undercooked compared to a brownie; this is normal.
